In my discovery of the spring industry I found myself astounded! I wasn’t aware there was so much to the design and creation of a spring. Turns out they’re not as insignificant as most of us make them to be.
Springs can be found in millions of devices or applications within several industries. Some of the industries we serve are shown below.
- Agricultural
- Automotive
- Aviation
- Computer
- Construction
- Electronics
- Manufactured Goods
- Medical
- Military
- Space
Medical Springs
Springs have made a breakthrough in the medical industry. Several are used in surgical procedures and other medical devices which have given the medical field the opportunity to save more lives. A great example of medical springs in action are auto-injector syringes and inhalers.
Both of these medical devices carry compression springs within them. The compression spring in the inhaler allows for the button to come back up after you push it. In the auto-injector syringes, the spring is pre-loaded and pushes the needle once it is triggered.
If it weren't for the springs in these devices, they wouldn't work. This means that asthma patients wouldn't survive an asthma attack and wouldn't have the liberty of being out and about. Diabetes patients who need insulin shots would have to go to the hospital every time they need a shot.
These springs have not only saved lives, but also improved the quality of life of millions of people.
Common Applications
You might recognize extension springs from the trampolines used in gymnastics. How many of us haven't shared a bunch of fun moments on a trampoline? As a kid I used to think that, what made me bounce off was the mat of the trampoline, but it turns out that it's the extension springs on the edges that give it the force to push you up off the trampoline.
If it wasn't for springs, maybe we would still have the inflatable bouncy houses but you can't compare the kind of bounce you get in a bouncy house to the bounce you get from a trampoline; the trampoline has more force and gives you a more accurate jump so you can do all sorts of flips and pirouettes, amongst other things.
Automotive
Springs are fundamental in the automotive industry. They come in buttons and several parts of the car's mechanism. Where you might notice them more is in its suspension though. The springs allow the vehicle to have stability and control on curves and bumpy roads as well as mixmize friction between the tires and the road.
If roads and streets were perfectly flat, we wouldn't need the springs in your automobile's suspension. Unfortunately, that is not the case. Even the smallest imperfection will make the tires go up and down and, without a suspension system, will end up causing damage to its frame.
This is why springs are so important in our everyday lives. This is why we thank god that they exist and make our lives that much easier.
